William Chilcote

October 19, 1920 — April 24, 2022

William August Chilcote died peacefully with family by his side on Sunday, April 24, 2022 at the age of 101 years. William (or Bill) was the son of the late August Alfred Chilcote and of the late Amelia Helen Luckhaupt Chilcote. He was the beloved husband of the late Mary Jones Chilcote; dear father of William A. Chilcote, JR, MD. (Barbara Kaplan, MD) of Pepper Pike, OH; Thomas J. Chilcote (Sandy) of Mechanicsburg, PA and David B.Chilcote (Ryan) of Chagrin Falls, OH;  Loving grandfather of Jeffery Chilcote, PhD and Michael Chilcote, PhD, Samuel, Timothy, Joshua Chilcote (Natkrita)  and Rebekah Myers (Jared), Courtney, Albert, Grady and Cameron Chilcote; dear great grandfather of Grace Myers and Damian Chilcote;  dear brother of the late Helen Chilcote Baker Miller, Marianne Frances Chilcote Brewer Foulds and Lee A. Chilcote.

Bill graduated from University School in 1939, where he was a member of the Glee Club and the Edward Moore Society. He was in the class of 1943 at Dartmouth College but, due to WWII, graduated from Dartmouth College and the Amos Tuck School of Business in 1946. He was a member of Gamma Delta Chi Fraternity.  During World War II, he was a member of the 89th Ferrying Squadron in the Air Transport Command and had over 1100 hours of flying time.

After the war, and upon graduation from Dartmouth, he joined The Chilcote Company and later also the Brewer-Chilcote Paper Company. He was elected President of The Chilcote Company in April of 1963 and served in that capacity until 1992 when he became Chairman of the Board. In 1999 he became Vice-Chairman and held that position until his retirement in 2013 at the age of 92.

Bill had a life-long interest in aviation and flying.  He was a member of the Cleveland Soaring Society and the North American Youth Glider Training Association. He spent many years “soaring” at Grafton, Chardon, Middlefield and Warren Ohio air fields. He was an avid golfer and belonged to The Country Club and the St. Andrews Club of Delray Beach Florida. He was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and was a charter member of the University School Tower Society.

The family prefers that those who wish may make contributions in his name to the Animal Protective League, 1729 Willey Ave., Cleveland, OH 44113.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Friday, June 24 at 5 PM at University School, Lower Shaker Campus, 20701 Brantley Road., Shaker Hts., OH 44122.
