Carmel Whiting

Carmel Bryan Whiting, 96, passed peacefully on Sunday, July 5th, in Beachwood, Ohio.

Born March 2, 1924 in Washington, DC. She was the only daughter of Sarah and Samuel Bryan, graduating from Paul Dunbar High School. She attended Howard University where she met her husband of nearly 50 years, Elmer J. Whiting, Jr., marrying in 1946. Carmel found joy as an educator for nearly forty years, first in the classroom and later as administrator with Cleveland Public Schools. Her Master’s Degree was from CWRU. Carmel and Elmer were one of the first to integrate Shaker Heights, building a home on Van Aken. Carmel volunteered her time to Jack and Jill, Cleveland Playhouse, Karamu, AKA, the LINKs Inc., Eliza Bryant, and St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.

Carmel was preceded in death by her brother Emmett, her parents, husband Elmer, son Michael and grandson, Coleman John. She is survived by her sons Elmer III (Jerry), Steven and David Whiting, grandchildren Michael, Bryan and Sasha Whiting, and great granddaughter, Leila Whiting.
