Bobby E. Johnson, age 85, of Cleveland Hts./Shaker Hts., passed away suddenly on Tuesday, June 16, 2020. He was born in Camden, TN to Chester and Carmel (Smothers) Johnson. He is preceded in death by his wife, Susan (Mallula) of 61 years, and is survived by daughter, Juliette Regnier (Michael) of Cleveland Hts., son, Jeffrey (Kathleen) of Orem, Utah, granddaughter, Meredith Webb of Cleveland Hts., step-granddaughters, Tausha Martin (Cleveland), Rachael Steiner (Scott) of Orem, Utah and his beloved brother, Terry (Patricia) of Newbury, Ohio. Plus nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He was a pool shark in his heyday. He played chess and bridge, was a self-taught plumber/electrician by trade, a survivor of polio, a film buff, loved Loony Toons, extremely well-read with a penchant for Jeopardy! questions, and a life-long student of WWII. He could spin a yarn and tell a mean story. He was a coffee-house fixture with his cronies philosophizing and debating all the issues of the day. Non-conformist in his life view, he cared deeply for the underdog, often helping the person no one would, was a devout vegan most of his life, left college (Case & John Carroll) as he bucked systems, and never cast a political ballot in his life. He was a character. Curmudgeonous and crusty, he taught his children to read before the age of 5 and to change their own oil. Along with his wife, his high school sweetheart (East High School ‘53), he championed Civil and Women's rights and was bone-deep proud of his Tennessee roots. Wore cowboy boots til he couldn't anymore. “Love you, Dad. Sure do.”
A Memorial Service and Celebration of Life will be scheduled late summer/early fall. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to any charity, human or animal, of your choice that serves the disadvantaged, lonely or forgotten.
