William Chisholm

June 1, 1928 — May 9, 2009

William Chisholm, Jr. was 80 years old when he passed away peacefully in his Gates Mills, Ohio home. Born on the 1st day of June, 1928 to William II 1901-1977 and Jane B. Palmer 1905-1989 in Cleveland, Ohio, William was the great-great grandson of Henry Chisholm 1822 - 1881, the founder of the Cleveland Rolling Mills, located on Cleveland's near south side. William attended University School in Cleveland, then was a graduate of St. Paul's School in Concord, NH in 1946. He subsequently studied at Yale University and was the graduate of the class of 1950. After graduating from Yale, William enlisted in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, and rose to the rank of Sergeant. Once discharged in 1953 with honor, he married his wife, Jane S. Williams, in Easton, Maryland and began his career as an Insurance Broker. Together, they had three loving children in William IV, Homer D. W. and Alvah S. Chisholm. He is also survived by six grandchildren. William was a Broker and Partner with Wilson McBride & Co. of Cleveland, OH, which later became part of Johnson & Higgins, then later became Marsh McLennan. He also wrote insurance for Orvis, the Cleveland Automobile Dealers Association, Grosstal Ski Area and various hospitals including St. Elizabeth in Youngstown and University Hospitals. In service to his community, William was Past President of the Gates Mills Improvement Society and the Gates Mills Historical Society. He was known for his speaking gaffes, as some even referred to it as the "Hysterical Society". At one annual dinner, he mentioned that a board member had expired, much to the puzzlement of that person seated near him. He meant to say the board member's term had expired. William often lent his energies to the Arthritis Foundation Telethon. He also devoted considerable effort to PLAN Planned Lifetime Assistance Network of Northeast Ohio. The organization is devoted to assist people affected by mental illness and their families. William enjoyed many outdoor activities such as boating, sailing, skiing, hunting and fishing. Having spent his youth in Brooklin, Maine, the water was always a big part of his life. He was a competitive sailor, whether it was club races in a small Beetlecat, or the Mackinac Race. More recently, he was the commodore of the Manalapan Yacht Club in Florida. Later in his life, he enjoyed traveling. When possible, he preferred to travel by boat. The family has suggested contributions to PLAN, 5010 Mayfield Rd., Suite 304, Lyndhurst, Ohio 44124.
