Dr. Thomas P. Mathew (80) was called to his eternal rest on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, in Cleveland, Ohio. He is survived by his beloved wife, Dr. Raichal Mathew; his son, Roshen Mathew, and daughter-in-law, Sneha; and his daughter, Ashley Mathew, and son-in-law, Noah Cepela. He is the dear brother of Kunjumariamma, Koshy, Alice, Jacob, Leela, Johnson, Manoj, Jessy and the late Abraham; and dear son of the late P.I. and Thankamma Mathew.
Thomas Puthenparampil Mathew was born into the Akeril Puthenparampil family in Melpadom, Kerala, India in 1946. After completing his B.A. degree in Philosophy and Psychology at Union Christian College, Alwaye in 1966, and his M.A. degree in Psychology from St. John’s College, Agra in 1968, he came to the United States to continue his education. He completed a bachelor’s degree in Sacred Literature from Circleville Bible College, Circleville, Ohio, in 1972 and a master’s degree in Community Counseling from Ohio University, Athens, Ohio in 1974.
He was a resident of Cleveland, Ohio, for more than five decades. He started working for the Cuyahoga County Juvenile Court in 1979. He retired in 2010 after a long and accomplished career where he worked as a Probation Officer, Social Worker, Detention Officer, Probation Counselor, Assessment Manager, and Probation Manager over his 30+ years at the Juvenile Court. In 2005, at the age of 59, he completed his Doctorate in Ministry from Ashland Theological Seminary, Ashland, Ohio. His dissertation explored developing a working relationship between the Probation Department of the Juvenile Court and local churches in the community to help delinquent children placed on probation by the Court.
He was a founding member of St. Gregorios Orthodox Church, Cleveland, Ohio, the first Indian Orthodox Church established in Ohio, and faithfully served the parish in various leadership roles over the years.
