Richard Nowak

Richard J. Nowak, M.D, was a successful private practitioner of Obstetrics and Gynecology, as well as a teacher, dear husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend to countless. Dr. Richard Nowak was born on March 25, 1922 in Rochester, New York to Mary and John Nowak. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1944 from the University of Rochester. Three years later, he received his Medical Degree from the University of Rochester's School of Medicine. His subsequent medical training took place at Great Lakes Naval Hospital Internship, 1946-47, Palmerton Hospital, Pennsylvania Residency, General Surgery, 1949, Johns Hopkins Hospital Residency - Obstetrics and Gynecology 1949-52 and University Hospitals of Cleveland Residency - Obstetrics and Gynecology 1952-54. During this time, Dr. Nowak served his country with the USNR Medical Corps at the commissioned rank of Lieutenant from 1946-1949. Dr. Nowak's professional activities included but was not limited to; Hillcrest Hospital: Former Chief of Gynecology, Past-President of medical staff, Past-Chairman of Utilization Review Committee, former member of the By-Laws and Credential Committee; University Hospitals of Cleveland: Former member of Utilization Review and Gynecology Policy Committee, Past-Chief of Gynecology Tumor Clinic, Associate Clinical Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology Case Western Reserve School of Medicine, Delegate to the House of Delegates of the American Medical Association, as well as President of the Cleveland Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and President of the Cleveland Academy of Medicine. From 1989 to 1990, Dr. Nowak was the Medical Director of Physician's Health Plan and from 1998 to 2006 he was the Medical Director of Qualchoice. From 1990 to 1998, he was Medical Director of United Health Care. Married in 1945 to his beloved, Irene J. Nowak, he fathered four children: Richard J. Nowak, Jr. of Shaker Hts., Ohio, Cynthia J. Nowak, of Dallas, TX, Carrie Simonton of Lakewood, Ohio and Cassie Nowak Stroup, MD Robert Stroup, MD of Russell Twp., Ohio. He was also a grandfather to Jessica, Sarah and Robby Stroup, and Hale Douthit. Dr. Nowak is also survived by his brother, Robert Nowak Mildred of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In his personal life, Dr. Nowak was a member of the Singers Club and Rowfant Club. He enjoyed and was a patron of The Cleveland Orchestra. Dr. Nowak was a dedicated 47 year member of the Saint Ann parish of Cleveland Heights, Ohio. He was also a member of the Cleveland Skating Club for the past 35 years. The family prefers that those who wish may make contributions in his name to The Aquinas Institute, 1127 Dewey Ave., Rochester, NY 14613, Laurel School, 1 Lyman Cr., Shaker Hts., OH 44122 or Saint Ann Church, 2175 Coventry Rd., Cleveland Hts., OH 44118 where a Funeral Mass will be held, Friday, April 17th at 11 am.
