Patience Cameron Hoskins

Patience Wilson Cameron Hoskins was born on July 24, 1928 in Stamford, CT. She grew up with four sisters and two twin brothers on the shore of Long Island Sound in Rowayton, CT. Her intellect and sense of service led her to a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Cornell University, a Master’s Degree in Science from University of Maryland, and a career in public health and as an Assistant Professor of Nursing at Yale University and Case Western Reserve University.

Patience had a deep love of nature, birding and hiking. She was the author of numerous volumes of the popular Cleveland on Foot and Beyond Cleveland on Foot guides in which she described the history, geography and natural phenomena of over one hundred walks and hikes in northeast Ohio.

Patience was a prodigious knitter and needle worker, producing many sweaters, hats and scarves as well as needlework pictures and pillows. She knit hundreds of tiny sweaters as ornaments for the Christmas tree, and her family and friends looked forward to finding them in her holiday cards every year. With her Judson community she organized a knitting group that knitted hundreds of blankets to comfort the newborns at Rainbow Baby and Children’s Hospital.

She was an active parishioner of St. Paul's Church in Cleveland Heights, a supporter of The Cleveland Institute of Music, The Cleveland Museum of Natural History, and an active member and supporter of the Judson Retirement Community.

Patience was a beloved wife to her husband Dr. Lansing C. Hoskins with whom she shared a loving and happy life, supporting each other's work and interests. They were very busy traveling, visiting family and birding on almost every trip.

She was a most cherished grandmother to her grandchildren Ashley Cameron Sakstein of Honolulu, Hawaii and Jonathan Cameron of Orange, Ohio, greatly appreciated stepmother to her family, and a loving aunt to her many nieces and nephews.

Patience is survived by her husband and grandchildren, her sister Martha Madson, of Aspen, CO, her stepson David Cameron and his wife Sandra of Orange, OH, and her stepdaughters Kimberly Smith of Stonington, CT, Marta Hoskins of Paris, France, and Sarah Hoskins and Rick Van Wickler of Stoddard, NH, step-grandchildren Schuyler Smith, Jacob Lyon, Caroline Smith and Ptolémé Lyon. She was very happy to meet her five great grandchildren. Patience was predeceased by her first husband Harry Cameron.
