Mary Josephine Magner, age 82, of Naples, Florida, formerly of Shaker Heights and Aurora, Ohio, passed away at Avow Hospice in Naples, Florida, on February 1, 2017 after declining health.
Born September 22, 1934, to David B. and Adelaide Magner (nee O'Reilly) in Detroit, Michigan, Mary Jo was a joy to all who knew her. She was a loving sister to the late Adelaide Anne Hock (Magner) and special aunt to Cynthia Hock Gannon (John) and great aunt to Quinn, Adelaide, and Nora Gannon of Scituate, Massachusetts. In addition, she cherished her cousins who resided in New York/New Jersey area. She and her beloved caregiver of the past 8 ½ years, Justice Davidson, shared a special bond and mutual devotion.
Mary Jo graduated from Beaumont School and earned her degree in Library Science from Ursuline College. This path led her to become the Directory of Library Services at Lakeland Community College in Mentor, Ohio, where she developed many friendships who were like family to her.
Upon retirement, she moved to Aurora, Ohio for a few years before deciding on making a bigger move to Naples, Florida in 2003.
A friendly, witty, loyal and generous soul, MJ enjoyed traveling, keeping up with current political events, reading, singing silly songs, and being with her dogs, of which she had many throughout her life. She brought humor into every situation and loved telling Irish jokes. She adored all things related to Ireland and Irish culture, especially visiting Jury's Irish Cabaret and listening to Irish musician Tony Kenny. She was fortunate enough to meet him once after a show which delighted her immensely.
Those wishing to pay respects may do so at Brown Forward funeral Home on Thursday, February 9 from 6-8 pm. Funeral mass will be held at The Church of St Dominic Friday, February 10 at 10am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Beaumont School or your local humane society.
