Marie Kennedy

April 30, 1912 — December 18, 2009

Marie L. Guerra Kennedy, 97, formally of Pennsylvania and Shaker Heights, and resident of Judson Bruening Health Center, joined her beloved late husband of 48 years, Roscoe J. Kennedy, M.D., formally of the Cleveland Clinic, on Friday, December 18th. Loving mother of Lawrence D. Maryann Kennedy of Solon and Robert J. Kennedy deceased with two granddaughters, Heather Kennedy and Colleen Hotz, and sister of Dorothy G. Guerra Moran deceased and John B. Guerra of Cleveland Heights with two nieces, Michele Guerra and Colette Gelin. Kennedy was a retired surgical R.N.and an avid volunteer in numerous fields of health and welfare. She was a charter member for over 50 years of the Womens Auxiliary of the Cleveland Auxiliary of the Cleveland Academy of Medicine, president in 1957, and received the OSMA Auxiliary Award in 1988. Mrs. Kennedy shared time at the Cleveland Sight Center for 28 years and in 1990 was Volunteer of the Year. In 1992 the Marie L. Kennedy Endowment Fund was established by her sons to honor her efforts there. Other community activities included the Mayor's Traffic Safety Council, past president of the Gavel club and Cleveland Clinic's Womens Auxiliary, boards of the Nearly New Shop and YWCA, Cleveland Playhouse Children's and Shaker Theatres, and director of the make-up committee at the Cleveland Skating Club's annual ice show for 20 years, a major fund raiser for the American Olympic Skating Team. She was also a championship curler at The Cleveland Skating Club, The Inter-Club of Greater Cleveland named her as their Woman of Achievement of 1977 and in 1989 the Exchange Club of the Heights enrolled her in their "Book of Deeds." The Womens City Club honored her in 1991 as one of "Gems" at their 75th anniversary gala. The family prefers that those who wish may make contributions in her name to the Marie L. Kennedy Memorial Endowment Fund at the Cleveland Sight Center, 1909 E. 101st St., Cleveland, Ohio 44106 or The Ophthalmology Research Fund at the Cleveland Clinic c/o The Cole Eye Institute, 9500 Euclid Ave, Cleveland, Ohio, 44095. Funeral Mass will be held at Church of St. Dominic, 19000 Van Aken Blvd. on Wednesday, December 23 at 10 AM. Family interment at All Soul's Cemetery in Chardon.
