Marian K. Shaughnessy (nee Kilker), DNP, of Gates Mills, Ohio, passed away peacefully on February 24, 2020. She was the loving wife of Michael R. Shaughnessy; devoted mother of Anne Shaughnessy and Katherine Biggar (Robert) of Cleveland, Ohio; and, dear sister of Dennis Kilker (Merry) of Euclid, Ohio and the late Thomas (Carol), Jack and Jerome Kilker.
Marian was a nationally-known nurse leader and philanthropist. She was the founder of the Marian K. Shaughnessy Nurse Leadership Academy, which is part of the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing at Case Western Reserve University. Here she served as Senior Director for Leadership Development, Co-Chair of the national advisory committee, and an adjunct professor in the Bolton School. Marian held board positions for not-for-profit organizations such as University Hospitals Medical Center of Cleveland and the American Nurses Foundation, as well as served on the Advisory Committee for the Notre Dame College School of Nursing. One of her more recent accomplishments includes helping to launch the national ‘Nurses on Boards Coalition’ for the American Nurses Foundation. Her earlier career included time spent with the Traveling Nurse Corps, along with various staff nurse and leadership roles at over 10 hospitals throughout the country.
Outside of her field, Marian engaged in various philanthropic and social endeavors, including but not limited to: The Twenty First Century Club, the Garden Club of Cleveland, the Recreation League of Cleveland, Legatus, Sovereign Order of St. John, among many others.
Marian was a fierce competitor, loyal friend, trusted advisor, and above all else, a caring mother, sister, and wife.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers that those who wish may make contributions in her name to the Marian K. Shaughnessy Nursing Leadership Academy at the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing @ Case Western Reserve University, 10900 Euclid Ave, Cleveland, OH 44106. A Funeral Mass will be held at 2:30pm on Saturday, February 29 at the Church of St. Dominic, 19000 Van Aken Blvd, Shaker Hts., OH 44122.
