Katherine Wood Piraino

November 26, 1955 — February 3, 2019

Katherine Wood Piraino passed away peacefully on Sunday February 3, 2019. While we are saddened that she can no longer be here with us we are grateful for all the memories we have of her which we will cherish forever.
Kathy attended law school at Case Western Reverse University where she met her future husband David. Kathy and David complemented each other with Kathy always pushing ahead as David provided a more cautious perspective.  She was able to be a wonderful mother and wife raising her three sons and functioning as the center and facilitator of her family.

Kathy helped shape us into who we are today. She was devoted to her family, and constantly worked to support those she loved. She could sense when simple things like a delicious meal, warm jacket, or new socks would ease a stressful day. She was also unwavering in her willingness to stand up and speak out to defend those she loved. Her son Scott still cherishes the memory of his mom reading to her three boys on the first day of school; willing to read, at her boys' request, one last chapter.

We spent many of our happiest moments with Kathy visiting new places, trying new things, and meeting new people. Her sense of adventure was one of acquiring genuine experiences and connecting with people. We came back from these adventures with many things from glass orbs and wooden maps, to key chains and hats but the things we returned with that we will treasure the most are the stories we will tell of Kathy for the rest of our lives. For her son Mark nothing captures her spirit of encouragement and adventure more then something which she said to him many times “go west, young man, go west”.

Throughout her life, Kathy was a woman with a gregarious personality and a big, beautiful laugh. She always spoke her mind to provide advice and guidance, and was always ready with a hug and a chocolate from the candy jar. To her son Chris, the memories of friends and family sitting around a dining table, eating the delicious food Kathy had cooked, and listening to Kathy laugh and tell her stories will be held dear forever.

Words can never capture everything that Kathy was and will continue to be for us. We can only hope that they will help those who knew and loved her remember how special she truly was.
