Obituary

In Loving Memory of John Aaron Pighee, Jr.

On April 8, in Hot Springs, Garland County, Arkansas, under a sky filled with shining stars, John Aaron Pighee, Jr. entered the world as the sixth child born to Helen and John Pighee, both of whom preceded him in death. His arrival brought great joy to his family, especially his sisters and brothers, who lovingly welcomed this precious new addition. To those closest to him, John was affectionately known as “Bicky,” a name that carried warmth, familiarity, and love throughout his life.

Raised in faith, John accepted Christ at an early age. He received his education in Cleveland, Ohio, attending Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Cathedral School, Alexander Hamilton Junior High School, and John F. Kennedy High School. During his time at John F. Kennedy High School, John distinguished himself both as a leader and an athlete, serving as co-captain of the Fighting Eagles Football Team. In 1969, the team proudly earned a City Championship after a hard-fought 14–14 tie against St. Ignatius Catholic School.

That same year, John made history as one of the first Black left-handed quarterbacks accepted to the University of Michigan. While at the University of Michigan, he played under the legendary Coach Bo Schembechler Jr. and was a member of the 1971 Rose Bowl Championship team—fondly remembered as the “Bo Boys.” These years were among his most cherished, shaping lifelong bonds and unforgettable memories.

While pursuing his Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication, John met and married Betty Holland (Hines). Together they welcomed two children: Arron Rashad, born in 1976, and seven years later, Shannon Brooke. John later married the love of his life, Monica Denise, whose untimely passing deeply affected him.

John built a successful career as an insurance agent and financial advisor, working with companies such as Aetna and Travelers for approximately fifteen years. Eventually, he ventured into business ownership before retiring in the mid-2000s. No matter his professional accomplishments, John’s greatest joy came from his family. He especially treasured time spent with his nieces, whom he affectionately called “The Wrecking Crew.”

Family meant everything to John. He was preceded in death by his sisters Mary Ellen and Frankie J., as well as his brother, Oliver. His love, wisdom, and spirit live on through those who survive him: his son, Arron Rashad; his daughter, Shannon Brooke; his sister, Tommie J. Hayes (Reginald) of The Villages, FL; his brother, Travis Dean of Cleveland, Ohio; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and dear friends who will forever cherish his memory.

In the early morning hours of October 27, John peacefully took his final breath. Though his physical presence is gone, his legacy of faith, love, leadership, and devotion to family will continue to shine through all who were blessed to know him.
