Jane Turnock

August 16, 1920 — November 22, 2009

Marian Jane Hunter Turnock died peacefully on November 22, with her loving husband of 67 years, Lawrence C. Turnock, at her side. Born in Cleveland in 1920, Mrs. Turnock graduated from Shaker Heights High School in 1937. After years of ballet training, she was invited to join the Royal Canadian Ballet but decided instead to attend college. In 1941 she graduated from Wells College, magna cum laude in Economics, and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. She met her husband-to-be in December of that year, and they were married in May of 1943. After World War II, Mrs. Turnock not only raised her four daughters but was active in her church and other volunteer activities, including service as President of the Wells College Alumnae Association of Cleveland. She was a founding member of The Cotillion in 1963 and its Ball Director the next year. In 1970 she earned a masters degree in history from John Carroll University. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Turnock is survived by four devoted daughters, Judith L. Turnock, Susan T. Mackenzie, Mary-Thomas Turnock and Elizabeth A. Turnock, and sons-in-law Byron C. Yoburn and Matthew Shipman, all of New York City. The family prefers that those who wish may make contributions in her name to Grace Lutheran Church, 13001 Cedar Road, Cleveland Heights, Ohio 44118 where a Memorial Service will be held at 2 PM. on Saturday, November 28. The family will receive friends at a reception immediately following that service at Mayfield Country Club, 1545 Sheridan Road, South Euclid.
