Ian Frederick Carlstrom, PhD died March 25, 2026 surrounded by family members.

Born in Boise Idaho May 16, 1941, Ian was raised there until he attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He met his loving wife, Barbara B. Carlstrom (nee Bachman), during his graduate studies at the University of California at Berkeley.

Ian and Barbara left California for Cleveland Heights, OH to raise their two children, Jon R. Carlstrom (Aileen) of Atlanta, GA and Michael D. Carlstrom (fiancé Kayla Mravec) of Lyndhurst, OH. He was the dear grandfather of Ryan and Rachel Carlstrom.

Ian taught philosophy at several universities and colleges through the years, including Case Western Reserve University, Kent State University, and John Carroll University. He had published papers on fuzzy logic.

He enjoyed computers and was a member of the ATARI Club during the 1980s, and enjoyed listening to concerts at Severance Hall. He was rarely seen without a camera in his hand, photographing family, animals, and scenery.
