Hazel James

April 29, 1923 — September 25, 2009

Hazel James was born in Chippinham, Jamaica on April 29, 1923 to Ernest and Caroline Forbes Robinson. She was the eldest of four daughters and one son. She attended Westwood High School and College in the Parish of St Anne's. She came to the United States in 1944 at 21 years of age. Two of her sisters were living in New York City. She got job working in the garment district. Later she moved to Cleveland, Ohio to live with her aunt and uncle where is obtained a job at American Greetings Card Company. Through a co-worker she met Glenford James in June 1953 and two months later they were married. They were happily married for 56 years. She was very active in her church: East View United Church of Christ. She was Womens Guild Treasurer for 10 years; held various other positions at the Church which included the Deacon and Trustee Boards and served as an Usher with her husband. Everyone loved when she baked brownies for fellowship after Church or a Bake Sale, but only her husband got the corners. She was a devoted mother to her two daughters Caroline and Glenda and later to her granddaughter Acoma. She took great care with her family and they especially loved her Sunday dinners which included roast beef and rice and peas. She also enjoyed giving her son-in-laws, Patrick and Rennie a "hard-time". She was affectionately known as "Mom" to Rev. Dr. Valentino Lassiter and his family. She was preceded in death by her sisters Carmen and Ernie Mae. She leaves her loving husband, Glenford; daughters Caroline Renoir and Glenda Patrick; granddaughter Acoma; sister Carolyn; brother Earl and a host of other family and friends to cherish her memory. Services will be held on October 1, 2009 at East View United Church of Christ, 15615 Chagrin Blvd, Shaker Heights, OH. The viewing will be held at 10:00am, followed by a celebration of her life at 11:00am.
