Carmela Marfella

February 10, 1964 — September 16, 2009

CARMELA MARFELLA-SCIVITTARO "LILLY" The beloved wife of Vincenzo Scivittaro of University Hts., OH. Lilly was the dear mother of Federico and Francesco Scivittaro. She was the beloved daughter of Giovanni and Norma Marfella and the dear sister of Fabio Marfella, all who live in her birthplace, Bari, Italy. Lilly graduated from the School of Biological Science of the University of Bari in 1988. Her academic achievements in Italy earned her a Ph.D. in Human Physiology in 1991. She and Vincenzo were married in 1991 and came to Cleveland to join the staff together at Case Western Reserve University. Lilly worked in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics and completed her Masters in physiology in 1998. Lilly left CWRU in 1997 when her twins were born, but returned to the work force as an adjunct professor at Cuyahoga Community College in 2004. Although she and her family had planned a November move to Texas, she continued to teach through the summer term, ending in August. She taught a myriad of science courses, to include micro biology, human biology and biochemistry. She was dearly loved and respected by her students and this tragic loss will be felt deeply throughout the Tri-C community. Lilly's love of art was demonstrated by her talent as a painter of both landscapes and still-lifes. Her work was a present to many of her friends and even sold on the internet. Her passion and love of her University Heights community was shown by her political activism and concern for the environment. She was a visible force in efforts to conserve and protect. Her work and advocacy never overshadowed her devotion to her family, however. Even the act of managing her boys' soccer team, the East Side Kickers, was an activity that rated high on her priority list. Those who wish may make contributions in her name to The Ronald McDonald House, 10415 Euclid Ave., Cleveland, OH 44106. Funeral Mass will be held Monday, September 21 at 11 am in The Church of the Gesu, 2470 Miramar Blvd., University Hts. FRIENDS MAY CALL AT BROWN-FORWARD FUNERAL HOME, 17022 CHAGRIN BLVD., SHAKER HTS., OH, SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 20TH FROM 3-5 AND 7-9 PM. BROWN-FORWARD SERVICE 216 752-1200
