Obituary

Beverly Fuller Sload of Shaker Heights, Ohio, passed away peacefully on June 20, 2026, at the age of 89. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. Bev will be remembered for her warm smile, kind heart, generous spirit, patience, athletic energy, and lifelong habit of putting the needs of others before her own.

Born on June 10, 1937, in New York City, Bev spent her childhood in Scarsdale, New York, before moving as a teenager to Skaneateles, New York, where she graduated from Skaneateles High School. She attended Wells College for two years before beginning a career as a flight attendant with TWA, a role she enjoyed for three years and one that reflected her adventurous spirit and love of people.

Bev met the love of her life, Jay Hoffer Sload, through a college roommate who was Jay’s cousin and believed they would be a perfect match. The two first met when Jay escorted Bev to a family wedding, and a lifelong romance soon followed. They married in 1962 and began a partnership that would last more than six decades. After a brief time in Birmingham, Michigan, they settled in Shaker Heights, Ohio, where they raised their three sons and built a home filled with love, laughter, and lifelong friendships.

Soon after arriving in Cleveland, Bev became deeply involved in community service through the Junior League of Cleveland. In 1979, she received the Ruth T. Lucas Award, honoring her dedicated, compassionate, and creative volunteer work on behalf of the Greater Cleveland community. Her passion for helping children led her to serve on numerous nonprofit boards, including United Way Services, Beech Brook, Children’s Guild, and Health Hill Hospital for Children. She later served as Director of Development and Public Relations for Health Hill Hospital for Children for nine years. Throughout her life, Bev devoted countless hours to improving the lives of children and families in need.

Bev also lived an extraordinarily active life. A member of The Country Club in Pepper Pike for 54 years, she enjoyed decades of golf and tennis with friends and family. At age 50, she took up distance running and went on to complete 13 marathons, as well as a 50-mile ultramarathon, earning numerous age-group awards along the way. To many in Shaker Heights, she became a familiar sight running through the neighborhood streets. Later, she developed a passion for cycling, often embarking on 50-mile rides simply for the joy of being outdoors.

Above all, Bev cherished family and had a special gift for bringing people together. For more than 50 years, she and Jay welcomed friends and family into their home for an annual Christmas celebration that became a cherished holiday tradition. Guests knew they would be greeted with warmth, laughter, and Bev’s beloved homemade holiday cookies, which disappeared almost as quickly as they appeared. She had a remarkable ability to make everyone feel welcome, cared for, and at home.

Bev was preceded in death by her parents, Francis Udall Fuller and C.T. “Bud” Fuller, and by her beloved husband, Jay Hoffer Sload.

She is survived by her sons, Michael Sload (Tammy) of Darien, Connecticut; David Sload (Carla) of Ratoath, Ireland; and Peter Sload (Patti) of Evanston, Illinois; her sister, Suzanne Cable of Bradford, Rhode Island; and her nine cherished grandchildren: Jeffrey, Amanda, Evelyn, Genevieve, Evan, Hannah, Katherine, Jack, and Charlie.

A celebration of Bev’s life will be held later this summer for family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cleveland Children’s Guild, a cause that reflected her lifelong commitment to helping children.
