Arch McCartney

Arch J. McCartney, 81, of Gates Mills died September 15, 2009 at his home, lovingly attended by his immediate family. He is survived by his wife of 45 years Emily Gale, three sons CDR Michael A. McCartney, USN and his wife Casey of Aiea, Hawaii, C. Andrew McCartney and his wife Amy of Highland Hts., and James D. McCartney of Washington, D.C., six adoring grandchildren Emily, Carrie and Abby McCartney of Highland Hts. and Stephen, Madison, and Alan McCartney of Aiea, Hawaii, a sister Virginia McCartney Milam of Woolwich, Maine and a sister-in-law, Sylvia Gale Oliver of Pepper Pike, numerous nephews and nieces and a host of dear friends. Arch was predeceased by a sister, Mary Jane Schafer and brother-in-law Wesley Schafer both of Cincinnati, Ohio a brother-in-law William Milam of Woolwich, Maine, and a brother-in-law Heath Oliver of Pepper Pike, Ohio. The son of Arch Duff and Mildred Jost McCartney, he was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. He attended Cincinnati Schools, graduating from Western Hills High School where his father was athletic director and his mother taught physical education. Always an outstanding athlete, Arch played football and swam in high school before becoming a Redskin, playing football at Miami University. Following graduation, he served two years in the US Army. Upon completion of his army duty, Arch's business career started at General Electric in NY. He relocated to Cleveland in 1954, joining Moser Bag and Paper Company, and then Sanitone Cleaners. Arch married Emily Gale of Lyndhurst, Ohio March 7, 1964 and raised Michael, Andy, and Jim in their home on Old Mill Rd. in Gates Mills. In 1970, Arch started with Bowden Manufacturing. He always loved that drive out River Rd. from Gates Mills to Willoughby, but he loved working with the people at Bowden even more. In fact, Arch never retired but rather became chairman of the board in 1999 while letting his middle son, Andy, take on the mundane title of president for him. His smile and red vest will be missed around the shop. A lover of all sports, Arch particularly loved playing tennis and skiing. He was actually on the tennis courts four weeks before he passed and his family will treasure the special memories they created on the slopes of Vail for his 80th birthday. The family prefers that those who wish may make contributions in his name to the Geauga County YMCA, 12460 Bass Lake Rd, Chardon, OH 44024-8315. Memorial Services will be held at 2pm on Saturday, September 19 at First Baptist Church, 3630 Fairmount Blvd, Shaker Hts, OH. FRIENDS MAY CALL AT BROWN-FORWARD, 17022 CHAGRIN BLVD, SHAKER HTS, OH. ON FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 18 FROM 2-4, 6-8PM.
