Amity Osborn

July 13, 1928 — October 1, 2018

Amity Joy Alexander Osborn, 90, passed peacefully from this life on October 1, 2018 at her home in Geauga County, Ohio. Born on July 13, 1928 in Rochester, Minnesota to John and Mary Alexander, Amity attended Groveland Park Elementary. She graduated from St. Paul Academy (Summit School) in 1946, and was Class of 1950 at Rockford College. Amity knew her husband Merritt since childhood. They officially met at dancing class when they were 12 years old, and were married in March 1952 (67 years). Amity was the mother of four children. She was active in Garden Club, and an avid tennis player and fan. She was secretary of the Geauga County Republican Party, and a founding member of the Chagrin Valley Athletic Club. She organized, co-led and attended three trips for the Rowfant Club. Amity made significant contributions in her husband’s businesses, and in a number of volunteer organizations throughout the community. An avid reader of mysteries and fan of detective shows, she also enjoyed crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles and word games. A keen listener, she connected with all types of people easily. Amity thoroughly enjoyed her ten grandchildren, and set up numerous fun-filled family reunions at Madden’s at Gull Lake, Minnesota, and the Island Inn at Sanibel, Florida. And, Amity and Merritt often hosted their extended family at their condominium in Destin, Florida for over twenty years.

Amity was the matriarch of our family, deeply loved, and will always be remembered and held dear in the lives of those she loved. She is survived by her husband, Merritt A. Osborn of Chagrin Falls, OH; her children, Stephen A. Osborn (Faith) of Mantua, OH, Susan P. Osborn of Lafayette, CO, Sarah W. Osborn (David Eden) of West Linn, OR, and Elizabeth B. Osborn (Gordon Holbein) of Bradenton, FL; her grandchildren, Merritt Osborn, Elise Goldwater (Adam), B. Jacob Schefrin, Rachael Schefrin (Jackson Burke), Samuel Eden, Connor Eden, Leah Jacobson, Joan Seymour (Sean), Theodore Jacobson, and Frederich Jacobson; and her brother Dean Alexander (Renee), and sister-in-law Valerie Osborn. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother-in-law Thomas Osborn, and son-in-law Daniel Weingast.

Family services will be held in St. Paul, MN. Those who wish to may make a contribution in Amity’s name to the American Heart Association, Northeast Ohio Chapter, 1375 East Ninth Street, Cleveland, OH 44114, or the American Lung Association, 6100 Rockside Woods Boulevard North, Cleveland, OH 44131.
