Althea Hughes

May 30, 1950 — January 8, 2010

Althea Hughes-Lewis passed away on January 8th, 2010 at the age of 59 in her Cleveland home. She was the loving wife of Edward "Skip" Lewis. They were married on Valentine's day in 1987. She was the dear mother of William and Michael Lewis, and a step mother to Yvette, Deborah, Pamela and Leslie. Althea was also the dear sister of Karl Greene. Althea Hughes-Lewis taught the third grade to children of the Cleveland Heights and University Heights city school districts. Her teaching career spanned 29 years. She chose to teach because she "felt it was part of the Hughes tradition", who were a family of educators. Althea actually changed her name from Green to Hughes because of the closeness and pride in the Hughes family and the family accomplishments. Althea had enjoyed gardening, reading and cooking. She was very involved in her church, and enjoyed church activities including teaching Sunday School at St. Cecilia's Church as well as attending mass and participating in the Praise Ministry at The Church of St. Dominic in Shaker Heights. Althea was a member of Heights Alliance of Black School Educators, the Virginia Hamilton Teacher Auxiliary Committee Kent State University and the Cleveland Heights University Teachers' Union. The family prefers that those who wish may make contributions in her name to the American Cancer Society, 10501 Euclid Ave, Cleveland, OH 44106. Memorial services will be held at 11am on Wednesday, January 13th at The Church of St Dominic, 3455 Norwood Rd, Shaker Hts., OH. Family interment, Highland Park Cemetery. To order flowers for the service, please call 216-283-3300.
