Joseph B. Balazs, age 83, passed away January 18th, 2018. He was the beloved husband of 57 years to Joyce C. Balazs and the dear father of one daughter and two sons: Anne E. Gold (Alan) of Rye, NY; David J. Balazs (Anya) of Shaker Heights, OH; and James A. Balazs (fiancée Melissa Garrett) of Mayfield Village, OH. Joe was the dear grandfather of Allie and Emily Gold, Andrew and Katie Balazs, and Elizabeth Balazs.
Joe was born in Cleveland, OH and lived in the Cleveland area for his entire life. He graduated from Shaker Heights High School, Case Western Reserve University and the Cleveland Marshall School of Law. After graduating from law school, Joe worked as a patent attorney for his entire professional career, most recently as Patent Counsel for Figgie International. Joe and Joyce enjoyed traveling together, creating their own itineraries for car travel through several European countries and spending many vacations on Sanibel Island, FL.
Joe was an avid sportsman, playing softball with the Lawyers' League and also playing tennis on teams and with friends several days per week for most of his adult life. He passed on his love of sports to his children and grandchildren, teaching them the finer points of baseball, tennis, pool and ping pong. Joe also loved wood-working and photography, creating beautiful photographs, furniture and wood toys from his workshop and darkroom in the basement of his Shaker Heights home. He will always be remembered as a kind, compassionate, wise, even-keeled and fun-loving person, who was truly devoted to his family above all else (although maybe not tennis).
The family prefers that those who wish may make contributions in his name to The Alzheimer's Association, 23215 Commerce Park #300, Cleveland, OH 44122. Funeral Services will be held in Wade Chapel of Lake View Cemetery, 12316 Euclid Ave., Cleveland, OH 44106 on Thursday, January 25 at 11 AM. FRIENDS MAY CALL AT BROWN-FORWARD, 17022 CHAGRIN BLVD., SHAKER HTS., OH 44120 ON WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 24 FROM 5 TO 7 PM.
