Nature 28

Patrick J. Coyne

June 18, 1948 ~ September 10, 2019 (age 71)

Patrick was born in Erie, Pennsylvania, on June 18, 1948.  From that day in June until he suddenly passed away on September 10, 2019, his life was devoted to his family, friends and colleagues.

As a husband, a father, a grandfather, and father-in-law, Patrick’s unwavering love was felt by us every day.  His deep commitment to caring for his family was the essence of who he was as a man. He brought us constant joy and laughter, stability and adventure. Patrick saw challenges as an opportunity to strengthen our bonds and frequently reminded us that “Everything happens for a reason.”

As a brother, a cousin, a nephew and an uncle, keeping in touch with family was crucial.  Every occasion of your life was important. They became part of his life stories. Your celebrations energized him and he never tired of showing it, preferably on a dance floor.

As a friend, it didn’t matter what time of day or night it was.  If Patrick wanted to talk to you, he called.  He needed to know how you were, how your life was going and that you were okay. I have many fond memories of lying in bed and hearing Patrick laughing downstairs as he chatted with you at all hours of the night. He cherished the time spent with you at dinners and concerts, art shows and canoe trips, lectures and sailing.

As a colleague Patrick was patient, understanding, and always willing to help.  He was a faithful mentor and proud of your work. Generous with his time and talent, he strived to help others achieve their dreams or realize their vision. Many colleagues became friends as he needed to keep his connection with you.

Your life mattered to him.  You were special to him.  Your individual uniqueness delighted him.   Deep in his soul, you were a part of him. We will all miss Patrick, this kind man, this gentleman, this decent and lovely human being.

Our love to all of you,

Beth, Evan and Moira

“The man is a success who has lived well, laughed often, and loved much;

who has gained respect of intelligent men and the love of children;

who has filled his niche and accomplished his task;

who leaves the world better than he found it, whether by an improved poppy,

a perfect poem, or a rescued soul;

who never lacked appreciation of earth’s beauty or failed to express it;

who looked for the best in others and gave the best he had.”

~ Robert Louis Stevenson
